Mechanical
NLI is very well known for supplying electrical equipment, but mechanical equipment accounts for roughly forty percent of our total sales. HVAC components such as chillers, fans, and heat exchangers are a major portion of our mechanical product sales, but valves, pump parts, and actuators are quickly gaining ground.
While we’ve always sold some mechanical products, it was our ASME III certification that really was the game changer. NLI originally put its ASME III program in place to help customers with unusual one-of-a-kind items, but we soon discovered there were huge gaps in the supply of ASME and safety-related items - gaps where products were completely unavailable, had limited undesirable choices, or where one remaining supplier was holding customers hostage.
NLI responded to availability gaps in both the ASME and safety-related mechanical products in three ways. The first way was to form great partnerships with best-in-class companies that manufactured products for commercial use. A good example of this is NLI’s partnership with Trane for chillers and chiller control units. NLI qualifies the Trane products and provides QA oversight.
The second method employs our in-house engineering resources to reverse engineer or redesign replacement parts or components. These components are then typically manufactured by partners such as MBF or Standard Alloys with NLI providing QA oversight. Products in this group are usually one-of-a-kind and NLI seeks to save the plant the cost and effort to perform a design change or modification.
The third way NLI fills product availability gaps is by working with partners that already have great products suitable for nuclear, or that can be redesigned for use throughout the industry. An excellent example of this is our relationship with QTRCO, which makes pneumatic quarter-turn actuators for severe duty applications. Their already superior designs were easily modified enabling them to be qualified for harsh environments.
